Facilitating Environmentally- Friendly Integrated Solid Waste Management Systems
We recently launched a project aiming to introduce environmentally- friendly and hygienically- sound integrated solid waste management systems in two regions of Georgia, namely – Kakheti and Samegrelo- Zemo Svaneti.
PMCG, as part of the collaboration with the relevant municipalities, will provide consultancy services to improve the managerial capacities of both these municipalities and the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG), with regard to institutional, organizational and financial aspects, to conduct communications and public relations measures and other activities related to technical assistance.
Overall, PMCG’s team will provide the following services: Support in the extension and improvement of municipal waste services; institutional strengthening and capacity building of the SWMCG, the administration of cities and municipalities, and the public service companies in the project area; development and implementation of management information and financial management information systems; consulting services to ensure financial self-sustainability of the new solid waste management systems; and providing support for the implementation of the composting and recycling pilot projects as well as of public relations and awareness- raising campaigns.

The changes cover many fields including the environment, where a proper solid waste management plan stands as one of the most instrumental pillars. Proper solid waste management processes will help us to live in a cleaner and more efficient environment with lower chances of disease, bringing our country closer to the EU Acquis Communautaire,”, said Erekle Pirveli, Consultant at PMCG.
The project is part of the KfW Development Bank’s “Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme II – Consulting Services for an Accompanying Measures Consultant,”, which aims to establish integrated solid waste management systems according to EU standards, as agreed in the Association Agreement signed between Georgia and the EU in 2014. The program covers the construction of regional sanitary landfills and transfer stations, the closure of existing landfills, the extension and improvement of street sweeping, waste collection and waste transport, as well as pilot projects for recycling and composting.
Finally, it’s expected that after the successful completion of the project, the SWMCG and the relevant municipalities will be able to properly operate and maintain new facilities and equipment, and thus contribute to the long-term protection of natural resources.
